Today, I review and embed Awesome Ultrasound‘s “[Ultrasound Lecture] How to Scan the Appendix – Principles (Part 1)” And “Part 2: How to Scan the Appendix – Live Demonstrations“.
All that follows are from the two resources above.
[Ultrasound Lecture] How to Scan the Appendix – Principles (Part 1)

How to Scan the Appendix – Part 1: PrinciplesIn this first part of the series, we focus on the essential principles for successful appendix ultrasound:
🔹 Graded Compression Technique
Gradually increase pressure to displace bowel gas and bring the appendix closer to the probe, improving visibility.🔹 Proper Transducer Selection
Start with a low MHz curved or microconvex probe to survey deep structures, then switch to a high MHz linear probe for fine detail and confirmation.🔹 Two-Probe Approach
Combine low-frequency and high-frequency transducers to overcome challenges in both obese and thin patients.🔹 Maximal Tenderness Probe Technique
Place the probe exactly over the patient’s point of maximal tenderness—this often leads you directly to the appendix.🔹 Finding the Ileocecal Valve as a Landmark
The ileocecal valve is a reliable landmark; once identified, carefully trace the cecum to locate the appendix.👉 Mastering these principles is the foundation of confident appendix scanning.
Stay tuned—in Part 2, we will move to live demonstrations where these techniques are applied step by step. A full version lecture will also follow.#Ultrasound #AppendixUltrasound #AppendicitisUltrasound #GradedCompression #UltrasoundEducation #Radiology #HowToScan #AbdominalUltrasound #UltrasoundTips #Sonography #AwesomeUltrasound
Part 2: How to Scan the Appendix – Live Demonstrations
Oct 25, 2025 #LiveDemo #AppendixUltrasound #HowToScan
In this episode, we move from principles to real scanning demonstrations.
You’ll see how to use both low-MHz curved array and high-MHz linear transducers to locate and confirm the appendix — even in challenging positions. After returning from Burundi and Ethiopia, where I shared ultrasound techniques in local hospitals, I realized again how powerful ultrasound is — accessible, radiation-free, and life-saving in the field.
Watch how each real-case demonstration connects theory to practice.
🔹 Key learning points:
• Step-by-step scanning sequence
• How to use two-probe approach effectively
• Normal appendix vs. ileocolitis case comparison💬 Don’t miss the next videos — upcoming cases of appendicitis series are on the way!
