- Place the probe in the midline in transverse orientation.
- Locate the splenic vein and portal confluence.
- The pancreas is anterior to the splenic vein and portal confluence.
- Angle the probe forwards and backwards to thoroughly scan the pancreas.
- The pancreatic head will be in the left half of the image (towards liver) and the tail will be in the right half of the image (towards spleen)
- Rotate the probe 90 degrees clockwise to scan in longitudinal plane.
- Use the left lobe of liver as a window to scan the pancreas.
- If there is difficulty in locating the pancreas, roll the patient in a left lateral decubitus position to move bowel gases away from the pancreas.
- Filling the stomach with water also helps in locating the pancreas.
