The National Institutes of Health is performing a new study called Biomarkers of Risk of Parkinson’s Disease.
The research team in charge of the study states on the study website “Over the past several years we have conducted extensive research in patients with Parkinson disease (PD) and related disorders. This research includes “biomarkers,” which are objective measures of a disease. We have found several biomarkers of PD. Now we need to test whether individuals who have these biomarkers develop PD later in life. We believe that identifying such individuals will help immensely in developing and testing ways to prevent or at least postpone the appearance of the disease in those who are at risk.”
The study has two main purposes. First it is to determine if people who have risk factors for Parkinson’s Disease have laboratory evidence (biomarkers) of Parkinson’s disease. And second purpose is to determine if people who have the biomarkers go ahead and develop Parkinson’s disease over the next several years.
The hope of the research team is that the study will ultimately help us develop ways of testing to help prevent or at least postpone Parkinson’s disease.
