Acute dyspnea often requires urgent evaluation in the emergency department to rule out life-threatening conditions such as pulmonary embolus or acute coronary syndrome.
Chronic dyspnea can be usefully evaluated with a six minute walk test at the hospital’s respiratory therapy department. It can be performed in the office. See:
