Facebook Watch will overtake YouTube as the biggest video platform. Here’s why. December 17, 2017 from Mashable.

Facebook introduced Watch on August 9 and deemed it “a new platform for shows on Facebook.”

Facebook’s emphasis on true identity means that it has a better understanding of what viewers want to watch both within Watch and across Facebook as a whole. While YouTube is known for anonymous trolls, Facebook has a strict “real name” policy and knows more “real” profile data on consumers than YouTube does. This will help Facebook serve more relevant video and a better experience to all.

This focus on video has already resulted in native Facebook video uploads getting 10 times more shares than YouTube uploads. The strategy seems to be working. Following Facebook’s initial emphasis on video about three years ago, there has been a 50 percent increase in uploads to Facebook by brands.

To lure advertisers, Facebook needs inventory to run ads against. To accomplish this, Facebook has started paying for original content. According to The Wall Street Journal, Facebook “is taking the risk out of the content-creation endeavor for many publishers, either by paying to offset their production costs or offering to license or buy their content outright.”

Facebook also is sharing revenue on advertising with 55 percent of ad revenue going to content creators and the rest going to Facebook. This is exactly the same revenue split that YouTube has with content creators on its own platform as part of its Partner Program. This revenue share program is a smart move on Facebook’s part and could be especially effective given the fact that numerous creators on YouTube are seeing massive declines in their YouTube ad revenue.
