The time is here for all primary care physicians to master point of care ultrasound. It markedly improves patient care. There are many outstanding resources on the internet. See Resources below for a list of my favorites and also for some ideas on how the clinician can inexpensively gain the needed hands-on expertise.
But there is no better online teacher than critical care specialist Dr. Liz Turner.
Here is Dr. Turner’s outstanding YouTube video “Point of Care Ultrasound: DVT” published April 2, 2013. Its run time is 29:32.

From 12:45 to 14:45 Dr. Turner gives us excellent examples of Compression Testing for DVT.
From 14:50 to 19:20, Dr. Turner discusses and gives examples of advanced techniques for DVT detection including augmentation (to detect evidence of DVT distal to the probe), color doppler, power doppler, and respiratory variation (which seeks to detect evidence of DVT proximal to the probe).
