“MANAGEMENT OF THE SICK YOUNG INFANT AGED UP TO 2 MONTHS” From The World Health Organization With Additional Resources

For me review of the  fundamentals of primary care medicine is one of things I do in my blog. For neonatology, I maintain current certification in The Newborn Resuscitation Course and in The STABLE course. I also review other neonatology resources from time to time.

A great complete resource is the Iowa Neonatal Handbook. See:

And here are links to some neonatology lectures from The Children’s Hospital Of Philadelphia:

For a complete list of neonatology resources in my blog, click on the Neonatology Category and on the Neonatal Resuscitation Category.

Today I reviewed some neonatology resources from the World Health Organization. They are:

  1. Chart Booklet:  MANAGEMENT OF THE SICK YOUNG
INFANT AGED UP TO 2 MONTHS 2019. [Link is to the PDF].
  2. Management of the sick young infant aged up to 2 months: IMNCI training course 2019. Participant manual [Link is to the PDF].
  3. Management of the sick young infant aged up to 2 months: IMNCI training course 2019. Facilitator Guide [Link is to the PDF].
  4. Videos to accompany the training manuals [above]

So I started by reviewing the Chart Booklet. Although the Chart Booklet is clearly designed for resource limited environments, the assessment algorithms can profitably used by primary care clinicians in the United States.

What follows below are some but not all of the pages of the Chart Booklet – These are just my study notes and so are not complete:Here are the forms WHO recommends to document the evaluations:

The schedule below is not what we would use in the United States but the slide reminds us to consider the complete needs of the infant and mother.

Again, the slide below is not how we would approach the problem in the United States.  We are reminded, however, of the importance of immediate referral and treatment when an infant is classified as having POSSIBLE SERIOUS BACTERIAL INFECTION or VERY SEVER DISEASE.
